The Kingdom of Bahrain—a name that translates as “Two Seas”—is actually an archipelago of 33 low-lying islands located in the heart of the Gulf. Situated along major Arabian and international trade routes between Asia and the West, the Kingdom has, for millennia, served as an important port and center of business. Today, the capital city of Manama is a vibrant cosmopolitan center offering an open economy and an educated workforce enhanced by modern cultural amenities like museums, shopping, restaurants and fine hotels.
Though modest in population, land area and resources, Bahrain has achieved considerable social and economic status. Our modern roads, international airport, telecommunications, public services, medical facilities and schools are considered among the best in the Middle East, if not the world.

Despite its small landmass and population, Bahrain has a rich cultural heritage dating to about 5,000 years back. The splendour of its ancient civilization is revealed in a wealth of historical treasures housed in its museums.
The Muharraq Museum is a small, one-store building; unimpressive perhaps at first glance, but containing many fascinating archaeological relics which trace the story of the island's past. These relics are well-illustrated by texts in Arabic and English and also by drawings and photographs.

The proximity of the main shopping malls and areas means you can get done in a few hours what might otherwise have taken days… assuming you can choose from all there is to offer. For modern-style shopping, there are four main malls – each individual in terms of design and atmosphere. Al A’ali Shopping Complex and Seef Mall are located in Seef district, while Bahrain Mall and Dana Mall are in the adjacent Sanabis area.
There are other popular malls, smaller only in comparison to the big four complexes, which offer an excellent variety of goods. These include the Yateem Centre (which has the advantage of being in the heart of Manama suq), Marina Mall, Lulu Mall (great for fabrics), Gosi Centre (lots of telecommunications products here) and Bahrain Commercial Complex, better known to residents as Sheraton Complex for its proximity to the international hotel.

Bahrain's love of all things equestrian is further revealed in its splendid racetrack, together with a grandstand those seats 10.000 spectators. Meetings are held every Friday from October to March. Car parking and programs are free; however, betting is strictly prohibited. As it happens, the largely expatriate Bahrain rugby team is one of the strongest sides in the Gulf. Other sports played at the Rugby Club include soccer, netball and circuit training, while the addition in 2001 of a new pool has led to the recent introduction of swim training squads - mixed, ladies' and junior groups.
